\nThe name of the town refers to its patron saint. This region belonged to \u00c1rp\u00e1d at the time of the Settlement of the Magyars in Hungary. The first document that mentions the town stems from 1264. In the 1440s Serbian refugees from the south settled in the area. Later they fled from the Turks onward so only a small group of Hungarians stayed here. In the medieval era Szigetszentmikl\u00f3s was in the hands of the kings of the time.
\nAfter 1690, Hungarian and Serbian settlers arrived, only to face new disasters in the town: floods, fire and disease. In the 18th century, the region became the property of the Prince of Savoya. Between the two World Wars a large number of buildings were constructed.
\nThe Second World War resulted in huge damage to the town, mostly because of the proximity of the airplane manufacturing facility.\u00a0 After the war, in 1949, a car factory was built near the town and this was followed by the building of housing estates in 1950.
\nSzigetszentmikl\u00f3s became a city in 1986, due to its proximity to Budapest and the industry that established itself there. The city is divided into 3 parts: the new housing estates, the semi-detached houses and the detached family houses.
\nThe growth of the population has grown in close relation to the development of the local industry. In 1946 there were 6,400 inhabitants, in 1990 there were more than 19,400 people and today this number has approached 25,500.<\/p>\n
