Dunavarsány

From the Budapest-Baja main road, after Dunaharaszti and Taksony we reach Dunavarsány. The village is 31 km far from the Chain bridge in Budapest. The village is on the Pest-plain, on the left side of the Ráckeve Danube branch and is between about 500 to 3000 meters far from the river. The whole village can be divided to two parts, “Smallvarsány” and “Bigvarsány”, which are separated by the Budapest-Kelebia railway.

The first settlers arrived here 15,000 years ago, followed by the Celts, the Romans and the Avars. Some history can be derived from the time of the settlement of the Magyars in Hungary.  In this area, there was an ethnic group called “Varsány”, whose role was to protect. Varsány first appeared in a document in 1259. In 1270 King István V assigned Varsány to the nunnery on the Rabbit-island (now called Margaret Island in Budapest). Under the Turkish rule, the village was destroyed. Emperor Lipót I revived it when he settled down some settlers from Türingen and Baden-Würtenberg in Germany. They are the ancestors of the German inhabitants.
