Szigetbecse was named after the Becse-Gergely clan, whose ancestors settled down in this part of the island. In 1479, documents mentioned the village as the property of King Mátyás’ widow, Beatrix. By the end of the Turkish rule the original inhabitants perished, but later Serb and ethnic German people settled here. Until 1946 almost 85% of the inhabitants were of German origin. Nowadays Hungarians and Swabians live there.
A famous tradition in Szigetbecse is its annual Easter “egg run,” held on Easter Sunday at 5:00 pm on Petőfi S. street. Tourism in Szigetbecse mainly revolves around vacationers and fishermen. There is a 9 km long resort by the Ráckeve Danube branch that includes 640 holiday houses.
The village is not located directly on the bank of the Danube because of the risk of flooding.  Instead, Szigetbecse is about 600-1000 metres inland from the Danube, separated by fields, meadows, smaller reeds and forests. This makes this region especially beautiful.
